Description
Despite the extensive use of COTS hardware such as VME and CompactPCI, the routine 'systems' necessity to connect I/O (input/output) signal wiring, particularly to backplane/motherboard interfacing connectors, frequently creates a number of challenges for the system builder/integrator.
These challenges are usually brought about by one or a number of the following situations:
- Very high number of discrete signal I/O wires to contend with
- Minimal space - this is typical in many ATR style of system enclosure
- Poor availability of suitable rear of backplane COTS ‘plug-up’ solutions
- Ribbon/insulation-displacement (IDC) may be considered for certain applications as not being robust enough – military for example
- Dedicated board OEM produced transition modules may be too large or offer a far greater level of functionality than is actually required and thus could prove commercially unattractive.
Whilst by no means exhaustive, the above list provides some idea of the potential difficulties to be overcome.
Elma-Mektron has a wealth of experience in providing I/O interconnection schemes which scope virtually any eventuality.
Necessity is the mother of invention and over the years the company has pioneered a number of innovative I/O interfacing solutions to overcome many of the above mentioned situations. For example, the company has produced a range of rear of backplane ‘plug-up’ paddle-cards for VME and CompactPCI applications. These allow for multiple wire solder-pad connection whilst retaining plug and socket arrangement between paddle-card and backplane.
Features and Benefits
- Available in a number of mounting orientations - e.g. parallel to the backplane or 90° to the backplane
- Bespoke tracking can be accommodated within a paddle-card to allow IDC and special connector breakout
- Quick and easy to rewire or reconfigure
- Tried, tested and robust solutions - used on many fully qualified rugged Elma-Mektron system enclosures
- Economical and generally ex-stock at Elma-Mektron
Depending on project quantities, flexi-rigid technology may prove the most efficient and preferred engineering solution. Here again Elma-Mektron has an unsurpassed experience in this field. Please refer to our dedicated 'Flexi-Circuit' section of our website for more information.
