In 1996 Mektron pioneered and produced the first COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Self) convection cooled VMEbus enclosure for military use.

In January 1997 the company moved to the current location at Unit 8, Bedford Business Centre.

In 1997 the company achieved its first international patent application for its ‘Crush Fold’ construction technology and in 1998 achieved a further international patent application for its ‘High Integrity Frame’ construction technology which applies to conduction cooled system enclosures.

In 1998 the company acquired the high investment pre-compliance EMC chamber and the associated test and analytical equipment.

In January 1998 the company achieved full BS EN ISO 9001 accreditation.

In 1999 Mektron Systems expanded the company’s activities in to the USA with the establishment of Miltron Systems Inc. on the back of a significant project with a major USA defence contractor.

In 2002 Mektron Systems acquired Unit 17 and following a major refurbishment of more than £250,000 have expanded operations into these new facilities.

In 2002 the company held its first Capability Open Day which received much acclaim within industry circles.

The period from 2002 to date has seen the progressive release of a number of many more problem solving engineering innovations pioneered by Mektron System. These include:
  • The world’s first conduction cooled CompactPCI (cPCI) ATR enclosure
  • Revolutionary, ‘Dock, Mate & Lock’ interconnection system
  • Ground-breaking high performance air-to-air heat exchanger technology
  • Embedded backplane termination
  • Rugged cabinet/console construction techniques for extreme environments
  • Progressive use of carbon-fibre material in enclosure technology
  • System housekeeping, nuclear circumvention and climatic control technology

2003 witnessed our second Capability Open Day which defied speculation by being an even greater success than the previous year’s event!

2003 also culminated in a record number of technical articles published within trade journals.

In December 2003 Mektron Systems became fully accredited through the British Standards Institute to BS EN ISO 9001:2000.

In October 2004 the company presented a COTS paper and hosted technical workshops at the major international ‘COTS in Defence’ conference in London.

In February 2005 the company went live with a major IT update based on Microsoft Axapta Navision software, representing an investment in excess of £300,000.

In August 2005 the company went live with a brand new website that includes a number of innovative and exciting features, aimed at making all aspects of our business operations far more accessible and informative. In particular it provides an invaluable design tool and knowledge base for system engineers and all users alike.

In October 2005 Mektron Systems was acquired by Elma Electronic Group. Mektron is now part of a wider family with Elma offering the strength of a larger company with a corporate view that should provide the foundation to enable the operation to grow with the right supporting infrastructure.

In November 2007 Elma-Mektron moved to a purpose-built 30,000 square feet facility on the Southern outskirts of Bedford, just 2 miles away from its previous home.  The building is fitted with future-proofed data and voice networks, multiple redundancy servers running the key business systems and state of the art security precautions, including a sealed, screened secure room.
